Evaluation Information

Aug. 24, 2025

As part of our commitment to ensuring a successful season, the BYBA performs player evaluations in order to create and tier our teams. This year, teams will be composed of players of similar skill level and placed in the appropriate tier.

Registered athletes will be evaluated by 3rd party volunteers, all of whom have extensive basketball experience and knowledge.

NOTE: For 13U Boys and Girls and 15U Boys and Girls, there will be multiple sessions for those players who wish to be considered for the competitive team. All players are required to attend session 1 if they are able. They will declare their intention for the competitive team during check-in. Due to the number of registered players, it will take multiple sessions to properly evaluate and tier teams. Players who have declared for competitive play will be asked to return for another session.

Tryouts for competitive players will be held during call backs for those who declared their intention of playing competitively this season.

ALL EVALUATIONS TO TAKE PLACE AT BSRC (Unless noted otherwise)

COACHES

Coaching staff will be assigned their respective teams after evaluations via email.

Coaches will be selected based on, but not limited to:

  • Experience
  • Availability
  • Whether or not a child is playing on that team
  • Standing with the BYBA and EYBA
  • Completion of a criminal record check
  • Completion of the Safe Sport Module
  • If they have coached with the BYBA before

Some registered coaches may be asked to Head Coach/Assist Coach based on the needs of the organization.

If you are interested in coaching/team managing BUT HAVE NOT REGISTERED YET please do so as soon as possible so we can assign coaches and start developing the practice schedule in addition to sharing important information from the EYBA and BYBA via email.

EMAIL is the primary way the BYBA communicates with volunteer staff. If you are not registered, you will not receive information and updates.

Practices will not be scheduled if a team does not have a Coach, Assistant Coach or Team Manager. Due to the Rule of 2 Policy, 2 registered BYBA staff members must be in attendance at practices or BYBA events when athletes are present.

As always, BYBA appreciates our volunteer staff members. We cannot do this without you, and we are so grateful for your time and efforts.

Our pre-season Coaches Meeting will be tentatively scheduled for Thursday, September 11th at 7 pm at the BSRC.

NOTES

  • We understand that some of our evaluations dates and times conflict with Meet the Teacher Nights for BGSD Schools. For those athletes who are unable to attend their respective evaluation session on time due to a Meet the Teacher event, please arrive when you are able and check in upon arrival. Someone from the BYBA will alert the evaluators that you have arrived and are participating

  • If you are unable to attend a session, please ensure that you are able to attend one of the other evaluation times

  • The 11U Girls Evaluation night has been moved to Ecole Horizon Heights for a Try It Out evening with hopes we may obtain more registrations in that age group. If you know of any girls born in 2015-2016 that are interested in playing basketball, please let them know about our Try It Out event on August 28th at 7 pm at Ecole Horizon Heights

  • Due to declaration deadlines set by EYBA, Competitive and 18U teams will be prioritized. Teams will be set and practice days and times will be assigned no later than 7 days after your last session

Here are a few reminders to ensure each participant has an enjoyable and efficient time:

  1. Please arrive on time to register.
  2. Check in with BYBA staff. You will be assigned a number which will be marked on your leg
  3. Players who do not wish to be evaluated for competitive play will also be marked with a star
  4. Evaluations will take place at the Beaumont Sport and Recreation Centre (BSRC), located at 5001 Rue Eaglemont, Beaumont, AB
  5. Athletes in the 13U and 15U Boy look s and Girls divisions must declare interest in being placed on the competitive team. This ensures that those athletes that wish to be considered for the competitive teams are contacted for call backs
  6. Proper attire should be worn; basketball or court shoes, athletic socks, t-shirt or jersey, and shorts
  7. Players should not wear jewelry or watches. In the case of religious or medical alert medals, please tape these items to ensure safety of all athletes. It is also recommended to have fingernails be trimmed short
  8. Only evaluators and BYBA board members will be allowed in the gym during evaluations. Parents and coaches will not be allowed inside the gym. Viewing areas are available to the left of the gym entrance and upstairs to the far right of the staircase at the BSRC
  9. All coaches will have an opportunity to collaborate with BYBA on finalizing teams. Once done, coaches or BYBA will be in contact regarding your team roster and first practices
  10. We will have a registration table set up for parents or volunteers interested in coaching or being a staff member for this season
  11. BYBA is pleased to provide a jersey, shorts and warmup jersey for athletes to keep. Please check in with the equipment manager on site to declare your jersey, shorts and warm up jersey size. YOU WILL RECEIVE THESE ITEMS PRIOR TO YOUR SEASON BEGINNING.
  12. If unable to attend, please drop by the BSRC on any evaluation night to provide your sizing for uniform and warmup jersey

Last but not least, come and have fun and leave your nerves at the door. You got this! Evaluations are NOT a try out. Evaluations are a tool for BYBA to place players on teams of similar skill level to provide a recipe for growth and success.

What can you expect at evaluations?

Players will be evaluated as a whole player; ball-handling, shooting, passing, and basketball knowledge. As well, notes will be taken on positivity and effort.

Players should not feel any pressure during evaluations. It is meant to be a fun and social way to see old team-mates and new friends as evaluators build our teams for this season.

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take!

We look forward to seeing you. If you have any questions, please email us.
